Here’s what we have goin’ on in TALK Greenville this month…

From Foxcroftwine.com/greenville

Who’s ready for a new year, a fresh start, a hard reboot?? We are for sure! As we enter the final month of this terribly topsy-turvy year (finally, right??!), we are ready to pop some corks and let the bubbles flow! We sat down for a little tutorial a few weeks back at a Champagne masterclass at Foxcroft Wine Co., and came away with a fresh supply of the sparkly stuff – all chilled and waiting for the celebration to begin!

a delightful “accident”…

Believe it or not, ol’ Dom Pérignon spent much of his life trying to kill the fizz in his wines! Wines produced in the Champagne region of France (the only wines that get to be called Champagne with a capital “C”) have the natural tendency to bubble, but early French wine makers saw this as a major drawback…a sign of wine gone bad. The English actually took a liking to the sparkles, shipping barrels across the channel in the early 1600’s, well before the French realized they were onto something – and we are so glad they did!

Pierre Moncuit “Delos” 2006…

It was a privilege to taste this 2006 Grand Cru which is comprised of grapes from only that year. The 37-acre Moncuit operation started producing champagne in 1860, and they pride themselves on their custom balancing (no stiff, stuffy formula here) for flavor and character. We belles love anything custom, so high points for making us feel special!

Lilbert-Fils Blanc de Blancs

This delicious creation comes from a small vineyard (only 8 acres) that began producing champagne in the 1700’s – so they certainly have experience on their side! Using exclusively Chardonnay grapes, they produce only 2500 cases per year, so it was a special treat to sip this broad, well-rounded, yet fresh and ripe result. We especially enjoyed the smaller boules or bubbles that tickled our tastebuds. One word of advice…once the cork is popped and this lovely champagne is exposed to air, the aroma and taste change dramatically; so be patient, give it a swirl, and enjoy every sip!

Jacquesson No. 743…(our FAVE!)

This is the champagne that Napoleon took along as an “essential provision” on his many campaigns, even taking it with him on his ill-fated invasion of Russia, thus introducing Moscow to the merits of the bubbly elixir.  In fact, on his visit to Jacquesson in 1810, Napoleon awarded them with a gold medal in recognition of “the beauty and richness of its cellars”. With a change in ownership in 1990, Jacquesson has continued that award-winning tradition. (Don’t we all love a winner?) With this kind of stellar reputation, consistency is key, and they’ve got it figured out -just sayin. And if it’s good enough for the Emperor, it’s good enough for us!

some champers trivia…and a challenge

When the clock ticks down at the end of this month…putting the final nail in the coffin of 2020…we will most definitely be celebrating with a bottle (or a case)!  Conveniently, December 31st happens to be National Champagne Day, after all.  Here are a couple of interesting facts about the sparkling elixir…. First, there are approximately 49 million bubbles in the average 750ml bottle.  We will take their word for it!  Second, the longest flight of a cork on record is 177 feet.  Our challenge to you…see how far you can make one fly (responsibly, of course) at the stroke of midnight as you welcome what we hope and pray will be a healthy, prosperous, harmonious 2021!

Thanks to the folks at Foxcroft for the education and their extra-special hospitality.  Stop by and let them show you around their collection of wines (with and without bubbles) and stay for a bite – you will not be disappointed!  They sure know what they are doing.  And our special message to you…we wish you all the happiest of holidays and a very happy brand-spankin’ new year!

Over New Years, belle friend of ours opened her champagne with her…get ready belles…CHAMPAGNE PLIERS !! Yes, it’s a thing – and a good thing at that!  This delightful instrument helps unscrew the cork and keeps it from shooting someone’s eye out at the same time. Not to mention that it makes a beautiful bar accessory.

The perfect gift for the host, bride and groom, or most importantly, oneself.

We just love picking up new tips-n-tricks from our belle friends. The way we see it…how can one possibly enjoy something without sharing that joy?!  Here are a few of the latest…

Bouillon du jour… Our very good belle friend  Marcia who happens to be excellent in zee kitchen says this is the only bouillon to purchase…and we heartily agree!

Thelma chicken boullion . Available at Amazon

We had the pleasure of supping with some dear friends the other night . The master of the house , who also knows his way around a kitchen and even more so around a grill, waxed poetic over this Knife sharpener. It is compact , easy to use and fits easily in your drawer. If the master of wings gives it a thumbs up then it should be a staple in every household. By the way it will work on your Cutco knives so you don’t have to send them back and forth for sharpening!  Thank you, Michael …you are def man enough to be a belle contributor!

Rachael Ray knife sharpener. Get it at Amazon

Champagne is always on our list and over the holidays, Marcia shared a new label to us that her local wine merchant had suggested. The taste test was a bubbly taste thrill, and we have already purchased for our own larders .

Find it at your local wine store or from K&LWines.

Now that you’ve cooked, sharpened and toasted, we think it’s high time for a little laid back time. While we are sure you have already buzzed through The Making of a Murderer (addicting, and we’d love to hear your thoughts by the by) you probably need a new obsession. Our savvy friend gave us the perfect solution :

Rectify. A Sundance TV series. Be prepared to hunker down. Let us know what you think

Chime away, belles!

champagne, Croghan's Jewel Box, flute, glass, Olive and Cocoa, One Kings Lane, Z Gallerie

We’ve spoken before about our love of bubbles…and we don’t mean the kind little children blow in the yard! We’re talkin’ champagne, prosecco, cava, sparkling wine…the delightful creations that tickle our noses and create a party-in-a-glass. Oh, what fun!!!

Well…speaking of glasses, there are some beauties out there that make the sipping even more fun…and über-stylish.

Here are some options…just in case you need to update your wares (or perhaps need an after-the-fact gift idea) before the countdown begins…

Loving this toasting set…

IMG_1905.JPG
From Z Gallerie, these are just a click away (and are under $40…a steal!)

Going a bit retro…

IMG_1907.JPG
These gold-rimmed, vintage beauties are available at One Kings Lane. Groovy!

And check out these “chic and sensible” flutes…

IMG_1908.JPG
From Olive and Cocoa, they double as super-stylish bud vases in the off-season. Brilliant!!

One last thing…because we like our bubbles chilled…

IMG_1906.JPG
Why not chill in style?? Available from Croghan’s Jewel Box (full disclosure…this is a shameless plug for a dear super-belle friend who does the most amazing job in the most amazing store in Charleston…and, yes, we might be a bit biased), this cooler will become a part of celebrations for years to come!

Santé!!

champagne, la Marca, Mirabelle, prosecco, Schramsberg, Total Wine

Now that the holidays are upon us, we thought it was time to share one of our favorite ways to celebrate any occasion…especially occasions with dear family and friends.

Belles are thankful for bubbles..and there are no better bubbles than champagne. We love the classics (orange label anyone?), but we don’t always want to spend our bankroll on it. We have found two wonderful champagnes that won’t break the bank. What better reason to pop a cork than that?! With these two brands, everyday can be a day to celebrate.

The first new fave is actually a sparkling wine. One of our best belle friends and fellow bubbly fan found this delightful bottle. La Marca is a fresh, slightly fruity bubbly. If you prefer a drier finish, wait for the next one up. But for a light, crisp glass at a great price ($12.99) and a beautiful bottle to boot, this one is belle-worthy. We can find this at our local grocery stores and Total Wine. We can’t thank Lisa enough for sharing her find, so we toast her with a southern sigh of gratitude!

20140726-140104-50464455.jpg

Our second find was actually found on a trip to the wine country when a small bevy of belles toured the Schramsberg Vineyard. Mirabelle (I mean really…we couldn’t possibly resist!!) is a wonderful dry champagne that comes in both brut and rose. We love it…a lot! It’s widely available, and at $21.99 we are guilt-free when sipping.

20140726-140851-50931561.jpg

20140726-140852-50932247.jpg

Bubbly makes belles creative, so we thought going as champagne for our next costume fete might not be a bad idea. In fact, it might be an excuse to throw a costume party!!

So, dear belles, we are raising a glass to you all…be a belle and grab some to share!
