Unless you’ve just fallen off the turnip truck, you know that vests are in…way in…in so far that they are going to hang around awhile. And we are thanking gawd because vests are the ideal layering piece and make a fabulous addition to any wardrobe. Especially ours and y’all’s.

Shearling, fur, faux, wool, long, short and in-between…there is an option for every belle. Fashionable and flattering for all ages…teen belles, sporty belles, sophisticated belles, laid-back belles, working belles, working-it belles, mom belles and beyond can jump on this trend. Here are a few of our faves…

IMG_1830-0

This grey and shearling is a beauty…classic, elegant, timeless. We see it becoming a staple for years to come…and we love the length! It is on super sale now at Intermix, an extra 30% off! This beauty is on tall belle’ s Christmas list by-the-by (Nonie belle, we sure hope you’re reading this!!)

IMG_2830.JPG

Another great find from Savvy are these cozy-chic rabbit vests. They are the perfect length whether you are petite or tall. And they are light as a feather – a blessing ’cause who wants to be weighed down?!? They are also not the least bit bulky…another blessing because we belles don’t necessarily go for extra paddin!! These vests can be super-casual or trés chic…or both at the same time! And…bonus…they are perfect for travel as they can be worn so many ways (on their own, under a trench, over a jacket or blazer (ooh…especially a lil’ leather number so it looks like a coat with leather sleeves)!

IMG_2831.JPG

And this sweater vest is another great option available at Savvy. A little shorter, encouraging the layering options…and don’t y’all just adore the sweater back? We think the play on texture is very smart. And who doesn’t want to look smarter?! And, by the way, the color way makes it a great addition to any wardrobe.

IMG_1831-0

Okay, this one makes us die just a little bit. We are swooning over the color-way, the pattern, the whimsy!! This is a vest to perk you up, add a little pep to your step, and put a smile on your face. Get it before it’s gone at Nordstrom.

IMG_1832

Next on our list is a faux shearling option. The perfect throw-on-and-go! Worn with jeans for a relaxed look or layered over a dress for an edgier feel, belles can rock this look a million ways. Find it at Shopbop.

IMG_1833IMG_1834

For the fashionista belles who want to make a statement here’s a jaw-dropping, to-die-for vest that adds a little toughness with leather. The leather can be removed so a belle can change it up with ease. Mouthwatering right?!?! This one can be purchased at Shopbop as well.

And last, but most certainly not least, is this so-right white vest…what a way to lighten up the dark and gloomy days of winter!! Again, the length is good for just about any belle and so is the price!!

Find it at Nordstrom.

We have a ” vested ” interest in keeping y’all on trend. Now do your part and “invest”!!

book buzz…a “girl-y” friday friend-1-1

We’ve noticed lots of buzz lately around Lena Dunham’s book,

IMG_1494-0.JPG
“Not That Kind of Girl”
(available at amazon)…and for good reason!

Dunham tells it like it is…cringe-inducing details and all…to explain how the embarrassing, anxiety-producing things that have happened to her have actually helped lead to her success – inspiring belles young and old to stand up, brush off, and carry on.

A really, really good read, belles!

got gratitude?

Tags

, , ,

We belles try to be constantly grateful for all of our “blessins”…but days can get so crazy-busy, we might overlook one or two. So…we thought we would remind ourselves (and you) on this day of thanks to take a break every day to be grateful. Years ago, Oprah started writing down five things that she was grateful for at the end of every day. They were often simple little things like someone holding a door for her…but knowing that she needed to collect 5 things by the end of the day made her really think about it! A very worthwhile activity, don’t ya think?

Another great/grateful idea we ran across…these cards from Uncommon Goods called A Year of Gratitude

IMG_1720.JPG
They come in a set of 52…one for every week of the year. The idea? Take time once a week to write a note to someone expressing your gratitude. It just might become contagious!!

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

manly gifts…takin’ care of the fellas on that list

Tags

, , , , , ,

We belles are quite thankful for all of our family and friends. This time of year just makes us sit back and say, “Wow…how’d I get so lucky?” In fact, all of this thankfulness has us in the mood for some gift-giving (hmmm…convenient as “you-know-what” is just a few short weeks away!). So…we thought we’d share some more gift ideas with you…focusing on the fellas.

(BTW…we’ve been told that the masses will be doing quite a bit of shopping online as the turkey bakes and the Macy’s balloons float across the TV screen…these ideas might help you beat ’em to the “click”)…

We’ve searched high and low to bring you some ideas that will surely take care of at least a couple of ’em. Grab your list, belles…let’s get busy!

First, a few items from Watson Kennedy, “purveyors of fine goods”…

For the wine-drinker…or the nice man who happily corks bottle after bottle for others (ahem…us)…how about this super-cool and retro French Zig-Zag Corkscrew:
IMG_1659

And you might pair the corkscrew with these Golf Ball Wine Stoppers
IMG_1658

Or along those same lines, how about a Tennis Handle Bottle Opener
IMG_1656
(Bonus…they have an option for the golfer as well!)

And for a classic little stocking-stuffer…
IMG_1657-0
How about these Kent Handmade Combs. So retro…and only $12!

Moving along…

Having a man-child who seems to never have time to shave, one belle thought this was the bee’s knees…

IMG_1655
This portable shaver from ShaveTech can be charged and used in the car…just right for the man on-the-go…or the college fella who says he “just never has time, Mom”. No excuses now, son.

Next, we all know our men cherish their “best friends”, so why not give them something to acknowledge that bond…

IMG_1661.JPG
…with a Dog Blueprint from Uncommon Goods. From the Airedale Terrier to the Wire-haired Dachshund, they have almost every breed you can imagine! (Side-note…they also have ballpark blueprints for the baseball fan)

Also from Uncommon Goods…

IMG_1664.PNG
This Sailcloth Toiletry Bag adds a bit of nautical style to the travelin’ man.

And what man doesn’t need a bit of wisdom?

IMG_1666.PNG

IMG_1667.PNG
These paper weights showcasing the infinite wisdom of Uncle Albert are an excellent choice! (And just $36)

For the James Bond wannabe…

IMG_1668.PNG
These Wifi and USB cufflinks should do the trick. And you get to be a Bond girl…holla!!

Just a couple more, belles. These are from Pottery Barn…go figure!

How about this Saddle Leather eyeglass case

IMG_1669.JPG

Or perhaps this iPhone case/wallet

IMG_1670.JPG
At last check…on sale for $9 with free shipping and monogramming. A steal!!

Of course…we could go on ‘n on, but the cookin’ and shoppin’ aren’t going to do themselves. Gotta get busy! Happy Thanksgiving, belles!!

belles are bubbling over…a celebratory friday friend-1-1

Tags

Now that the holidays are upon us, we thought it was time to share one of our favorite ways to celebrate any occasion…especially occasions with dear family and friends.

Belles are thankful for bubbles..and there are no better bubbles than champagne. We love the classics (orange label anyone?), but we don’t always want to spend our bankroll on it. We have found two wonderful champagnes that won’t break the bank. What better reason to pop a cork than that?! With these two brands, everyday can be a day to celebrate.

The first new fave is actually a sparkling wine. One of our best belle friends and fellow bubbly fan found this delightful bottle. La Marca is a fresh, slightly fruity bubbly. If you prefer a drier finish, wait for the next one up. But for a light, crisp glass at a great price ($12.99) and a beautiful bottle to boot, this one is belle-worthy. We can find this at our local grocery stores and Total Wine. We can’t thank Lisa enough for sharing her find, so we toast her with a southern sigh of gratitude!

Our second find was actually found on a trip to the wine country when a small bevy of belles toured the Schramsberg Vineyard. Mirabelle (I mean really…we couldn’t possibly resist!!) is a wonderful dry champagne that comes in both brut and rose. We love it…a lot! It’s widely available, and at $21.99 we are guilt-free when sipping.

20140726-140852-50932247.jpg

Bubbly makes belles creative, so we thought going as champagne for our next costume fete might not be a bad idea. In fact, it might be an excuse to throw a costume party!!

So, dear belles, we are raising a glass to you all…be a belle and grab some to share!

hello there , pumpkin…you’re lookin’ quite belleicious!

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we thought this might be the perfect time to share an old favorite of ours…a dessert that will have your guests giving thanks to the cheesecake fairy…and you!

This is the ultimate fall version of cheesecake, adapted over the years from two different recipes…one from Once Upon a Chef, and one from Fine Cooking. So gather your supplies and make your plan. You will definitely want this on your menu!

Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust

IMG_1701

The instructions:

For the crust, you will need…
IMG_1690
– about 40 Gingersnap wafers (to make 2 cups crumbs)
– 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
– 5 T unsalted butter, melted

The how-to…
IMG_1691.JPG
Place cookies and sugar in food processor and pulse away til it looks about like this (uniform crumbs). Transfer to a bowl and add melted butter. Combine thoroughly (use your hands…best way to go about this).

Press the mixture into the bottom (and slightly up the sides) of a greased 9-inch springform pan.  Chill for 5 minutes, then bake for 10 minutes at 325 degrees. Let cool.

Now for the filling…you will need:
IMG_1692
– 1 can pumpkin (15 oz)
– 1 1/3 cups sugar
– 1 t cinnamon
– 1/2 t ground ginger
– 1/4 t ground nutmeg
– 1/4 t ground cloves
– 1/2 t salt
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 24 oz cream cheese, room temperature
– 5 large eggs, room temperature

In a small, heavy saucepan, combine pumpkin sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and salt…
IMG_1693.JPG
Bring to a sputter over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to med-low and stir for about 5 minutes until thickened.

Pour into food processor fitted with metal blade, leaving feed tube open…
IMG_1694.JPG

Process for 1 minute.
With the motor running, stream in the cold cream.
Add cream cheese (cut into chunks) and process for 30 seconds (stopping to scrape down sides if needed)

Add eggs and process for 5 seconds until incorporated (do not overmix!)
IMG_1696

Filling complete:
IMG_1695

In a tea kettle, bring about 4 quarts water to a simmer for a water bath.

Baking…
IMG_1697
Place springform pan onto 2 sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil
Pull foil up sides so that water cannot seep into cake in water bath
Place springform pan into a large roasting pan.

IMG_1698
Pour batter into the crust.
Pour boiling water into roasting pan to come halfway up sides of springform
Bake until set, about 1 1/2 hours (if it jiggles, it’s not ready yet!)

Carefully remove roasting pan from oven and set on wire rack.
Carefully loosen cake from sides of pan using a paring knife.
Allow to cool for about 45 minutes.
Remove springform from water bath. Discard foil.
Allow to continue to cool on wire rack for about 3 hours.
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours.

Tempting…
IMG_1700
Sadie doesn’t really care about formality or presentation…she just wants a taste now!

However…for human purposes, we tend to make it a bit more presentable. Remove outer ring of the springform, then slide a thin metal spatula between crust and pan bottom to loosen and slide into a serving platter. (Or…leave the cake on the pan bottom and serve as is).

Consider serving with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream or a yummy caramel sauce…you can’t go wrong.

Hope your guests (and furry babies) can control themselves!!!
