In trying to avoid the dreaded carbs, we sometimes have to sacrifice some of our favorite dishes. Well…that’s just sad!

While we still sometimes (often) throw caution to the wind and dive into the bread/pasta/rice bowl (pick your poison), our belles ring like crazy when we find a way to enjoy a dish guilt free.

Enter the unrolled egg roll…

Egg Roll in a Bowl from Simple Roots Wellness

Egg Roll in a Bowl…the Belle version…

1 lb ground sausage (or other meat…we used white meat chicken)

1 carrot, shredded

1 small onion, finely chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 pkg mushrooms, finely chopped (we used baby portobello)

2 T olive oil

1 T sesame oil

1 pkg “angel hair” cabbage (we used Fresh Express)

1/2 c Tamari (or soy sauce)

1 t minced ginger

Sliced green onions

Sesame seeds

Drizzle olive oil in sauté pan.  Begin sautéing onion, carrot, and garlic.  Brown for 1-2 minutes.  Add ground chicken/other meat.  Stir/chop to break apart as the meat and veggies cook.  Remove mixture from pan.  Add second tablespoon of oil to pan and sauté mushrooms.  When mushrooms are browned and thoroughly cooked (3-4 minutes), return meat mixture to pan.  Add sesame oil, cabbage, the Tamari, ginger, and green onions.  Stir to incorporate.  Allow to cook down until cabbage wilts.  Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Serve in a bowl…or use lettuce leaves as a wrapper.  Delish!!

Fringe has been a big trend, but we think tassels may even be bigger…and not for nothin’ either because they can be a lot easier to carry off without looking like you’re trying to relive the 70’s!

A few of our favorites…

In the kicks department:

Thank you j.crew! And, of course, for you girls who are afraid of heights, j.crew has a flat version:

IMG_2249 Comfy and stylish…a win-win!

Here’s a little beauty that looks way more expensive that it is, making it virtually irresistible. From Nordstrom…

IMG_2250

It’s no secret…we belles do love to make a statement with a shoe, and this one from shopbop surely fits the bill…and then some!

IMG_2251

And we couldn’t resist throwing out an option for the baby belles, also from j.crew!

IMG_2253

Movin’ on, belles…because we love a good pocketbook and tassels add just the right amount of sass…

This one from Rebecca Minkoff shows that this smart-cookie designer knows her way around a purse!

IMG_2254

And we can’t leave Tory out! This cross-body from Tory Burch is cross-generational…meaning all the women in the family will be having hissy fits over this one.

IMG_2255

And it wouldn’t be right to ignore the inside of the purse, now would it???

From Banana Republic…

IMG_2593. Awesome-ness…just sayin’.

Or how about this monogrammed little beauty (belles always love a monogram)!! Get it at Clare V…

IMG_2592

And then there is always a phone case, ’cause the phone could use a little fashion boost, too! From Henri Bendel:

IMG_2591

And our ears could always stand a little extra “something-something”. These two from shopbop are the perfect way to add a little pizzazz to a classic ensemble…

IMG_2260

IMG_2259

And, belles…bathing suit season is just around the corner, so how about adding a touch of whimsy to your cover ups???

A pareo from Revolve Clothing…

IMG_2263

Another festive option to frolic in, also from revolveclothing

IMG_2264

And let’s not forget that tassels can upgrade a patio, porch or party in no time flat.

Island love from etsy:

And another glorious accessory for zee home or fete from food 52:

So, belles…obviously, tassels aren’t just for loafers anymore!
Tassel on belles!

wrapping it up…South-of-the-Border style

lettuce wraps, Mexican, south of the border, taco, wraps

We’ve shared Greek and Asian versions of the lettuce wrap in previous posts…now let’s head South-of-the-Border for a little at-home fiesta! From the Taylor House, this recipe actually happened quite by accident. A taco night without taco shells isn’t always a bust…a belle can always make-do in a pinch…just sayin’.

The Taylor House Taco Lettuce Wrap

20140629-095734-35854519.jpg

– 1 pound ground beef
– 1 package taco seasoning ( a little trick …if you add a small can of tomato paste when you add seasoning it will take the meat to a whole ‘nother level…word)
– 3/4 cup water
– shredded cheese
– chopped tomatoes
– chopped onions
– sour cream
– cilantro
– avocado slices and /or guacamole
– salsa
– “little gems” romaine leaves

Brown the ground beef. Add taco seasoning and water (and tomato paste…if you’re smart and want your taste buds to dance…just sayin’ ) Simmer for 5 minutes. Chop onions, tomatoes, cilantro…and slice the avocado or make your guacamole.

Now…set up a taco bar for some do-it-yourself action, and enjoy!

Now THAT’S how to wrap up a fiesta, belles!

it’s a wrap…a belle’s Greek twist on the lettuce wrap

greek, lettuce wraps, recipes, wraps

Lettuce wraps…a sneaky little way to get the kids to eat something green…can be THE answer to “what’s for dinner” in oh-so-many ways! As we have noted before, we tend to watch the unnecessary carbs…so when we started thinking outside the bread box, the lettuce wrap options seemed to come from all corners of the world! Today, we want to share a Greek version…but pay attention, belles…we have a couple of other wraps up our sleeves (think Far East as well as South of the Border) that will have ’em scrambling to the table…just sayin’!

First, we must say…the “little gems” (baby romaine heads) from Costco fit the bill for these recipes to a tee. Just the right single-serve size, these baby leaves hold up to the hardiest of fillings…and the flavor doesn’t interfere with even the mildest of seasonings. Pretty much perfect in our book!

And now for the ideas abondant…

To wrap it up Mediterranean-style, start with these quick and easy Lamb Meatballs courtesy of Diners Journal…the New York Times Blog on Dining Out:

20140529-135600.jpg

20140629-073101-27061461.jpg

and for a couple of hints to make this even easier:

– if you want to skip mixing up the sauce, grab a container of the “Hannah’s Tzatziki Yogurt Dip” or a container of hummus (or maybe both…remember, belles love options) right there in the refrigerator case at Costco. These are excellent with the lamb!
– and to deconstruct the recipe even more…you could skip the forming of the meatballs altogether! Use the seasoning instructions, then brown the ground lamb on the stove-top!

Now, set up a “wrap bar” for the family (and/or guests) to build-their-own…
– baby romaine leaves
– meatballs
– yogurt dip/sauce
– hummus
– tomatoes, chopped

To round out the meal, serve our Cucumber, Tomato and Feta Salad from the “Cool as a Cucumber” post (Thursday, June 19, 2014).

That’s a wrap, belles!
