just (lobster) roll with it…a belle-icious friend-1-1

french fries, goop, Lincolnville Beach, lobster, lobster roll, Maine, McLaughlin's Lobster Shack, recipes

We told you about our Maine experience a couple of weeks ago (read here) and went on & on about the food…lobster to be specific. Some of the best lobster rolls can be found at the shabbiest road-side dives all along the coast, and we sampled our way for miles-n-miles!  Our favorite was at McLaughlins Lobster Shack in Lincolnville Beach.  Just take a gander…

Well…not that we can even come close to duplicating their perfection…we have found a worthy substitute. If you can’t make it to Maine this summer, you can at least pretend!!

From our dear friend, Gwyneth (she doesn’t know that we are so dear to her…but perhaps one day she will realize what she’s missing), here is an authentic stab at this delightful creation (with a side of fries to boot!)

From goop …

and for the fries…

One thought…we suggest you consider using a fresh loaf of Italian bread, sliced like a 2-inch (or wider) piece of toast in the place of the hotdog buns as a slight variation. Granted, the hotdog bun is a classic…but the bread allows for that chance to brush a bit of olive oil on the cut sides so that it can be grilled or toasted. Simply split it in the middle and fill. Just a belle’s two cents.

Enjoy!!

it ain’t easy being green…unless you are this soup!!

arugula, broccoli, goop, soup

We found this “yummy” from GP at Goop…our go-to source for über-cool ideas in the fashion and food worlds (as well as a good dose of inferiority…just sayin’). So, when we find a real winner, we like to share it with you…’cause that’s what we do!

This soup is healthy, easy, clean-eating certified, and tasty to boot!!IMG_2574

Broccoli and Arugula Soup

1 T olive oil
1 clove garlic thinly sliced
1/2 yellow onion, roughly chopped
1 head broccoli, cut into small florets
2 1/2 cups water (can use chicken broth…we did)
1/4 t coarse salt
1/4 t freshly ground black pepper
3/4 cup arugula
1/2 lemon

Directions :

1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion, and sauté for just a minute or until fragrant.IMG_2568

2. Add the broccoli and cook for 4 minutes, or until bright greenIMG_2570

3. Add the water and/or broth to pot with salt and pepper; bring to a boil, lower to a simmer and cover. Cook for 8 minutes or until broccoli is just tender.

4. Pour the soup into a blender, add arugula, and purée until smooth. Note: If using a blender, let soup cool briefly prior to blending. Or…if you want to go the belle route, add the arugula to the pot and use your handy-dandy stick blender (an essential in every kitchen…just sayin’).IMG_2573

Serve the soup with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Green never tasted so good!!

get your greens…a healthy party pleaser to ring in the New Year

artichoke, goop, kale, New Year's

Time to plan that New Year’s menu, belles…yes, more food!!! But, there’s no need to allow this occasion to dash our resolve to make a healthy start to 2015.

Spinach-Artichoke dip has been around for ages…and is still quite the party-pleaser. And with the added bonus of being 90% (our rough guess-timation) veggies, it has some powerful redeeming qualities.

But here’s a new twist from our friend Gwyn (not really)…posted on goop…

IMG_1992.JPG

It’s a Kale and Artichoke dip that sounds positively belle-icious!!

Think we’ll be giving this one a try. We encourage you to try it as well…remember, on New Year’s Day, greens mean “green” (aka: $$$) for the year ahead.

Wouldn’t want’cha to miss out on that, belles!!!!

amazon, Bergdorf Goodman, Cartier, gifts, Giles & Brother, gloves, goop, jewelry, MoMA, personalization, rosemary, Sur la table, topiaries, travel, umbrella

For this edition of our gift-giving suggestions, we thought we might share some very useful, yet budget-friendly (all under $50!), options. We are regular “goop” readers and saw a couple of these on her gift ideas post…but we went digging a bit further, keeping prices low and practicality paramount. Hint to either of our mothers, sisters, children…(cough, cough) we kinda like this stuff. Might we find one or two in a stocking or under our trees?? Just sayin’.

From the MoMA Store…

IMG_1710.JPG
The 4-in-1 travel adaptor…$25. Good for the travelin’ belle or fella

And more from the MoMA store…
Nothin’ but blue skies…

IMG_1711.JPG
The Blue Sky Umbrella… What belle wouldn’t like this overhead on a rainy (or snowy) winter day?? Just $48…or get the collapsible version for $40.

Operate that “rectangle” in the cold…

IMG_1712.JPG
Keep the fingers warm and in control with these artsy Touchscreen Gloves. A budget-friendly $28…and they come in a man-friendly black and gray, as well!

For the blogger…hint, hint…cough, cough…

IMG_1713.JPG
This A-Fold iPad Stand makes an awful lot of sense. Come on…it’s only $48!

For the cook…from Sur la table…

IMG_1714.JPG
This rosemary tree wrapped in burlap would make a delightful delivery! Can be used as part of the holiday decor, but will be used and appreciated well after the tinsel has been cleared! This one will only set you back by $29.95. (And for a local, do-it-yourself delivery…we’ve seen some great rosemary topiaries at Home Depot. Just do a bit of creative wrapping and you’re all set!)

Here’s one that goes a wee bit over budget…$55…but we just had to share:

IMG_1715-1.JPG
From Bergdorf Goodman, the Giles & Brother Personalized Skinny Railroad Spike Bracelet is edgy and stackable…so the entire family can be commemorated! (By the way…it’s a bit reminiscent of this little beauty from Cartier…only $7545 less!)

For the younger set…

IMG_1717.JPG
This Outside the Lines coloring book should keep ’em busy for a bit. Order on Amazon for just $18 or less…and they have other suggestions as well.

Or maybe a book or two…

IMG_1718.JPG
The Open Ocean is interesting and educational…you might even find yourself curled up with it! From authors Pittau and Gervais who have another couple of books in their repertoire…maybe you should buy a set!

So there you have it, belles…lots of perfectly practical, thoroughly thoughtful options for your gift-giving pleasure.

Ho, Ho, Ho!
