bookshelf, decor, organizing

With all of our hibernating and hiding out this winter, what better time to do a little refresh???  One belle made use of a recent blustery day to do a little makeover. Here’s the bookshelf in zee kitchen…dusty, messy, not attractive…time to get busy!

Empty, dust and pile…watch a little Netflix …get back to bookshelf bidness…

Lots of piles…

Decide to remove covers for neatness and redecorating ease.  Begin returning books to shelves using color and frequency of use as guides.

Still have a ways to go… But showing signs of improvement!

Progress!!! Now time for a little touch of color. Chose to use some plates that were collecting dust in another room.. Lettuce belongs in zee kitchen !!

Now it’s time to pay bills and drink wine!!!

We will try to organize the desk during the next snowstorm!!

A little refresh goes a long way as the whole room looks better…at least we think so!

acrylic furniture, Aquatalia boots, barbecue sauce, Bezels and Bytes, blondies, budhagirl, favorite things, Fretwork Designs, kale, okra, Perennials, salted caramel, tenderloin, The French Poodle, the skimm, tomato pie, white jeans, Wisteria

To celebrate two years of this blogging business…and nearly 400 posts (yes, we have hit quite a milestone)…we thought it would be fun to list our favorite – and most talked about – posts (’cause we are really, really sweet, and we all need gentle reminders of stuff we need to do, buy, make, read…)

In the #belleicious category:

First up…The French Poodle Vinaigrette. This salad dressing is a constant in our homes. If you haven’t tried it, what are you waiting for?

Remember our foolproof Tenderloin recipe?  You’re welcome 😉

IMG_3907
Belles love barbecue…and grandmother’s BBQ sauce is the gold standard…

IMG_3908
This roasted okra puts a tasty spin on a veggie favorite…

IMG_3909
And in other “eat your veggies” news…you must try this tomato pie…

IMG_3910

Seems to be all about the kale lately…this kale salad is a winner every time…

And if we are gonna splurge on dessert, it better be worth it. These salted caramel blondies do not disappoint!
Some #fashionabelle reminders:

White jeans…yes, you can wear them after Labor Day!

Aquatalia boots…you won’t believe the comfort, style and practicality!  Every one is a real belle-ringer…

For the mindful belle…these BUDHAGIRL bangles totally make the cut…

For the belle-maison:

Remember when we suggested Perennials outdoor fabrics?  Well, they are still our go-to for beautiful, durable upholstered pieces!

We are still all about acrylic pieces to bring a little light to a room…

And this fretwork from FretworkDesigns is still one of our favorites…
And, last…but not least…for the belle-on-the-go:

We still start every day with The Skimm (and some giggles)..we encourage you to do the same

And we keep track of our running around with our FitBit Flex, made über-stylish with our Bezels and Bytes bracelets…

And there you have ’em, belles…our faves so far!

belles try their hand at painterly pumpkins

The season of gourds is upon us, and it seems everyone is getting more and more creative with that good ole pumpkin.  We happily hopped on the day train and came up with this:

 Via therarebelle

You might ask how we came up with something so ingenious. Well, the results were pretty good…and all ours…but we can’t take credit for the idea. We were cruising for some fall decorating ideas and stumbled across a few things on Pinterest that inspired us….

And then we happened upon these Chinoiserie Pumpkins !! Oh. My. Gawd.   You could have knocked us over with a feather!!

Just take a gander at this from Enchanted Home :

 Via enchanted home.com

And  this…

Via enchantedhome.com

And as we dug a little deeper, we came upon these from The Relished Roost

Via The Relished Roost

A nice bonus…we realized these incredible artists had these pretties available for purchase…and, with a little heads up, would even customize to a degree. So, of course, we tried to purchase a few for our fall table (bookshelves for the rest of the year!!). Alas…they were sold out.

Well, these belles are no quitters!  We decided this was the perfect time for us to try and get a little crafty ourselves.  So this is what we made with some acrylic paint, a few faux pumpkins, and some paint pens.  Don’t judge too harshly…but we do think they turned out alright for our first go at it….

Above pic is pencil sketching our design …

We decided to do a Paris Porcelain effect with a gold and white look ….

And then we put them on display…

So belles, Cinderella those pumpkins…they deserve to be the belles of the ball!!!

(And they don’t have a midnight curfew!)

decorating by the numbers…for the in-style home

Ballard Designs, curtains, decor, decorating, drapery, home decor, InStyle, lighting, Pottery Barn, sofa, Susanne Kasler, Williams Sonoma

We ran across an article in the September INSTYLE that really rang our belle!  It listed loads of helpful tips from the “experts” on how to make any room look like you really know what you’re doing on the design-front. (and when in doubt…fake it, belle!!)

Here you go…in no particular order…we think they are all worth a share…

the Collins Sconce from Pottery Barn

66 inches…

Wall sconces should be installed just above eye level…around 66 inches from the floor…so the light doesn’t shine directly at you (and if you hang them too high, they will light the ceiling instead of the room

from homedit.com

30 inches…

your bed is generally about 30 inches from the floor…so why not put your nightstand on the same level??  That makes it the perfect height for the alarm, the book, the water…whatever needs to be within reach

from bestbuy.com

8 feet…the best distance for viewing a 42″ TV (the most common size) is 8 feet.  Adjust from there for larger or smaller screens

thebudgetfashionista.com

2 inches…An insert that is 2 inches larger than your pillow covers will make pillows seem plush and generous.

the Hunter Sofa from mgbwhome.com

84 inches…this is the minimum length for a comfy sofa that will seat up to four people (or one adult lying down). This size also plays nicely with a standard 60-inch coffee table.

the Hunter Sofa from mgbwhome.com

1 inch…leave an inch between furniture and the wall…this keeps the upholstery from looking squished and the paint from getting scuffed (a win-win)

29 watts…apparently,  GE’s 29 W Halogen Frosted bulb is the most face-flattering of all bulbs out there.  Thank goodness someone is studying this!!  A belle always wants/needs to look her best.  Just sayin’…

williamssonoma.com

This one photo has a plethora of belle-ringing decorating numbers…

7 feet…always hang an overhead lighting fixture at least 7 feet above the floor  (don’t want your NBA-sized friends bumpin’ a noggin’)

18 inches…we don’t want you (or those NBA-sized guests) bumpin’ a shin, either.   Leave 18 inches between your coffee table and the sofa or other seating

62 inches…the center of your artwork should be between 62 and 66 inches from the floor…that’s the standard measurement in most galleries (and it just makes for good viewin’)

cotedetexas.blogspot.com

1 1/2 inches…for a tailored drape, allow a break of no more than 1-2 inches (too much puddling can be messy for a tailored, streamlined curtain)

So there you have ’em, belles. It’s easy as 1-2-3 (or 66-30-8-2…)

Happy homing!

an artist among us…a very belle gift idea

art, artwork, gifts, paintings, Star Haney Art, Starr Haney

We are fortunate to be surrounded by a bevy of talented belle-friends (a smart belle keeps good company, just sayin’). One such friend is someone you oughtta know!  With the holidays approaching, we have been putting on our thinkin’ caps for some cool, super-special, meaningful gifts for our own nearest and dearest. If you are doing the same (and we suggest that you do…time’s a-wastin’), this particular belle might just be your answer!

Starr Haney, of Starr Haney, Art and Design,  is ringin’ belles all over the place with her unique, fun, and simply stunning artwork.
From commissioned paintings of your furry friends…

our very own Sadie

to edgy insects…

to moments artfully captured on canvas…

to awe-inspiring abstracts…

this “Starr” can deliver!

Starr captures the mood and energy behind each and every piece, leaving us with a creation that feels like a warm hug, raises spirits, and induces a smile. We feel positively giddy when we take a gander at our pieces of her work!

Contact Starr here on her Starr Haney Art Facebook page, follow along on Instagram (@starrhaneyart), and check out her website, www.starrartandgraphics.com.  But don’t lollygag…she needs time to work her magic!  She is taking Christmas commissions until November 15, but is filling up fast!  This is also a great idea for graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day…

And if you run a bit behind (which we have been known to do) or want to be sure the gift is even more perfect…Starr can wrap up a blank canvas and your recipient can choose the subject!!  How’s that for belle-ringin’ personal service?

We don’t know why we haven’t mentioned this before…but we happen to know of an absolutely brilliant flooring option that is ringin’ belles all over the world!  Our flor catalog arrived just the other day, and we realized it was our duty to do some sharin’.

Just pop out the unsightly tile and pop a fresh one in. Presto cleano!  And their Return and Recycle program is Mother Earth-friendly common sense.

Take a gander…

consoles, furniture, home, home decor, One Kings Lane

Okay, so here’s the deal…we have a foyer/front hall situation.   We have needed to replace a console table in the aforementioned front hall for some time now.  We have patiently…okay, okay, we have been tapping the toes some time. Going on 6 months now.

We can’t look at this empty space any longer…simply cannot…soo ….

We went to One King’s Lane to see what they had to offer. Well, we are here to tell you that the bevy of choices will knock your socks off.   We aren’t quite ready to pull the trigger on a high-dollar item that we can’t touch or feel, and we are going to be redecorating an office, so a classic piece that could transition over is what we are looking for.

We picked two so far..but can’t seem to decide.  We would love some feedback and to hear your vote, opinion and/ or thoughts.  Ans if you have a console find that you love, we’d really like to see it!  (We are a bit partial to parsons consoles…but need to know its going to look high end on arrival…need to go in a different direction this time)

This acrylic console has us all a flutter ….  We like the idea that it is contemporary, high design , yet would fit with the existing decor

This beauty is timeless and elegant and we could see it fitting a number of places if we decided it was time for a little change. The black and gold is so chic!

Decisions decisions…we need all the help we can get… Here is a pic of the spot where we want to place the console.

That poor little table just can’t handle the space. It needs a more intimate spot.
So help us out belles….please chime in!

amazon, books, garden club, James Farmer

IMG_2781The South is all about entertaining, eating and garden clubs…that’s just how we roll down here. We both belong to a great garden club with monthly meetings and at least two great parties each year…holla! But we have several dear friends who are members of what we call “the serious one”. So, when we were invited by the “serious” garden club to hear a wonderful speaker and have a delectable lunch, we didn’t hesitate to accept!

On the the date of the luncheon, we donned our finery (sometimes it’s nice to get out of the yoga pants and throw on some heels) and headed over to the Poinsett Club. Tables were adorned with the most beautiful spring arrangements, put together by the über-green-thumbed members. Lordy, these ladies are talented with a capital T! They even had a little pop-up shop featuring wonderful gardening tools, entertaining ideas and clever gift items. There were also three books available, written by the guest of honor, James Farmer. We barely got our hands on them! There were a couple of moments when we thought the fur might fly with the high demand. (Not from these belles, mind you…just sayin…). Luckily, we emerged with everything intact and autographed books in-hand. Time for some sustenance! IMG_2309 We sat down to a beautiful lunch that included Farmer’s pimento cheese (we posted the recipe here), his famous biscuits (one bite and y’all won’t need to ask why they’re famous) and a healthy serving of Mr. Farmer’s wit. We have attended quite a few of these “belles who lunch” affairs and have heard a good many speakers. James Farmer is, by far, the most engaging, entertaining, humorous and – most of all – inspiring of them all! We couldn’t wait to get home and prune a little from our yards (and the neighbors’)! We wanted to throw a dinner party immediately; and we could hardly get in the kitchen fast enough to make that pimento cheese…and we hadn’t even cracked open the books yet! Speaking of the books…we each came away with these two…IMG_2335His gardening book, A Time to Plant, was already sold out when we got there (at 11:32 am) so we are ordering from Amazon. You must order as well so you can find out about the May rule….or do you know it?? It was a pleasure to remind ourselves to bring the outdoors in, even in the smallest way; to rethink the art of entertaining as an opportunity to share and engage, not a chore or burden; to know that taking time in the kitchen brings tradition and creativity together…which then brings friends and family together.  IMG_2337Simple tasks bring great rewards, and sharing is everything! James Farmer is a true southern gentleman, and we can’t possibly thank our serious garden club friends enough for sharing him with us. But we’ll try by inviting them over for some ham biscuits, a cocktail or two, and camellia from the yard in a beautiful vase…all displayed on motha’s silvah of course!!

come on in…door colors that say “welcome”

decor, doors, home, Paint

If windows are the eyes of the home, the doors actually “speak” to those who approach, saying, “Come on in”. Just how that message is delivered depends on several factors…curb appeal, belles…but let’s focus on door color for now. A quick update…an easy fix…minimal commitment…a coat of paint can work magic!

Now, we understand, some belles prefer the traditional. Stained wood, black, and even red are beautiful, yet expected. Why not punch it up a bit, belles? A fun door color says “welcome” to guests and says “home sweet home” to yours truly.

A couple of belle-ringin’ examples…

IMG_2020

IMG_2021.JPG

We happen to know that these belles get a little giddy every time they walk in these happy-colored doors.

Now, one belle-friend recently decided it was time for an update of her own…

She has doors all the way across a loggia-style front porch, giving her many options for welcoming one and all…

IMG_1446.JPG

Above is a “before” shot…classic, yet fairly “business-like”…not quite fitting with this particular belle’s personality

IMG_1448.JPGIMG_1449.JPG

here are two of the colors this belle considered (the Chinese red is used in various places in the home’s interior, so it made sense to consider it as an option.  The chartreuse was a suggestion from a color-savvy consultant)

IMG_1457.JPG

and here is a soothing gray-blue which this belle had been pondering for a couple of years…don’t know what she was waiting for!

IMG_0055

The perfect choice, don’t you agree?

Let’s look at the before and after:

IMG_1447

IMG_0056.JPG

Brilliant!!  Welcoming, soothing…a belle-worthy upgrade!  These doors scream (softly), “Come in and stay a while”
